Jaguars track has a good first meet at Fort Worth Christian

By John English

As the track and field season gets under way, Flower Mound coach Andrew Cook said he is optimistic about what he has seen from his team early on.

Cook said his team has had a few setbacks, but seems to have responded well.

“I was concerned about this first meet, because we have not had a whole lot of time to practice with all of the bad weather lately,” Cook said. “Our focus was to put our best effort into every event and to not worry about times or distances. Despite our lack of practice, the kids had an excellent first meet (at Fort Worth Christian) and finished third in the varsity girls division and second overall in the varsity boys division.

“We have a great group of hard-working kids this year, and I’m excited to see them improve over the next couple months.”

The Flower Mound track team competed at the Fort Worth Christian meet last weekend in its first meet of the season.

“Highlights were the first-place finishes in the girls 4x200 and boys 4x400,” Cook said. “The varsity girls placed third and the varsity boys place second in the team. Connor Ward won the girls 3,200 and 1,600. Robert Zeller won the 3,200 (results that said he placed second was wrong) and the 1,600.”

Cook said his team already looks good in a couple of areas, as well.

“Currently, we look strong in the relays and distance events,” Cook said. “If we want to be more competitive, we need to find more points in the field events.”

Flower Mound will compete in the McKinney Boyd Relays this coming weekend, and Cook said he has one expectation.

“For the McKinney Boyd relays, we want to continue to improve,” Cook said. “There's still not a lot of pressure, we just want to go out and compete and try and run, jump, and throw better than the other team.”
