Argyle equestrienne signs with Baylor

By Ben Hooper
editor@flomosports.net

I'm sure somebody who's now involved with this website wrote at least one story about Alexis Gray of Argyle years and years ago, when she was a young equestrienne standout, but that story has since disappeared into the electronic ether and will remain lost unless some reader out there has a copy of it from the sadly defunct Messenger newspaper. (If you do have that story and don't mind scanning it, it would be great to post for the sake of nostalgia ...)

Gray is now a Baylor Bear! From the Baylor website:

Alexis Gray is a Western rider from Educational Plus Ministries in Argyle, Texas and is the daughter of Brian and Gina Gray. Her list of accomplishments include: 2004 NRCHA World Show Top 10 Youth Limited... 2005 NRCHA Reserve World Champion Youth Limited... 2006 NRCHA World Show Top 10 Youth Bridle... 2007, 2008 and 2009 NRCHA World Show Qualifier Youth Bridle... 2004 and 2006 SRCHA Youth Limited Regional Champion... 2007 and 2008 SRCHA Youth Bridle Regional Champion... 2008 NRCHA Youth Bridle Regional Champion... 2007, 2008 and 2009 AQHA National World Show Qualifier Youth Cowhorse."
"This is a fantastic group of student-athletes," equestrian head coach Ellen  White said. "I know they will help us continue to contend for conference and national championships."

By John English

Marcus alum Shane Rogers recently committed to play basketball for Oklahoma City University for the 2010/2011 season.

Rogers, who played 63 games for Collin County Community College, averaged over seven points, four rebounds and two assists per game and was a first team All-Conference selection for the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference in 2009-2010.

According to OCUsports.com, coach Kevin Morrissey said Rogers is a great addition to the Stars squad.

"We were immediately drawn to Shane because of his toughness and feel for the game,” Morrissey said. “He is a good shooter and an underrated athlete. He was a major part of a team that went 51-12 in the last two years in a tough conference.”

Rogers graduated from Marcus in 2008, where he averaged more than eight points on nearly six rebounds a game on a team that finished with an 11-3 district mark and went four rounds in the playoffs.

“He brings character, maturity, hard work and a high skill level to our basketball program,” Morrissey said. “He’s been a winner everywhere he has been, and I speak for our entire program when I say we are thrilled to add Shane to our team, and we are excited about the opportunity for him to have an immediate impact on our program.”

Marcus Beats Carroll, Grabs Share of Division Lead

By John English

The Marcus Red hockey team improved to 3-1 on the season on Thursday with a 3-2 victory over undefeated Southlake Carroll.

The victory pulled the Marauders into a five-way tie for first place in the Varsity division in the early part of the season.

After a scoreless first period, Connor Shurkey got things going for Marcus on a powerplay goal, with assists from Nick Felan and Brandon McGuire just 21 seconds into the second period.

The Dragons came back with two unanswered goals in the next three and a half minutes, but Michael Kissinger tied it up for the Red team in the ninth minute on an unassisted goal, and the game was knotted at two heading into the third.

Kissinger scored again at the 1:41 mark of the third period, and the lead held, as Marcus picked up the victory.

Kyle Michels and Brandon Salisbury both assisted on Kissinger's second goal.

The Red team will play the Marcus Black team at 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Farmer's Branch Miller Arena.
